Line-up: Marcus Roberts - piano, Thaddeus Expose - bass, Jason Marsalis - drums
Marcus Roberts is perhaps best known for the development of a new approach to jazz trio performance, which relies on all musicians sharing equally in shaping the direction of the music.
Roberts grew up in Florida influenced by his mother’s gospel singing and the music of the local church. After losing his sight at age five (1968), he began teaching himself to play piano and had his first formal lesson at age 12. Then went on to study classical piano at Florida State University.
He is an accomplished composer who has received numerous awards, including an honorary Doctor of Music degree from The Juilliard School in 2014. In 2013 his first piano concert, commissioned and performed by the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, was premiered. He has been performing with orchestras all over the world since 1992.
Currently Roberts serves as Associate Artistic Director for the Savannah Music Festival and is on the faculty at the School of Music at Florida State University.
